Then I went to Goodwill one day and found two nightstands and a headboard for $99, of course I have no before pictures because my immediate thought was BUY NOW. I finally found a bathroom rug whose price i agreed with and with that finally finished the guest bathroom. My inspiration was the purple soap dispenser that I got from Crate and Barrel on clearance. I decided to go with purple and green as the color scheme. I originally had a rather boring green leaf shower curtain whose price was so very right but the look itself was just so boring. I found the present shower curtain at Marshall's and even though it was outside of my price zone, I got it anyway. For art, I originally planned to create something like this .  But instead it came out like this . Fortunately, I was inspired by an abstract piece of work on Vern Yip's house tour on HGTV and created this: using purple and gold spray paint and acrylic paint. It was lots of fun. I never really formally introduced myself on this blog. Ok, here goes. My given name is Oluyemisi Olotu and I am a writer. I wrote a novel in 2000 which I self published called Vision: a plain ole love story . Those who loved it loved it, those who hated it, hated it. I am not good at self promotion so I really didn't sell many copies of the book. My life's mission is to help people live better lives. So vague, I know. I realized that writing wouldn't help bring that to life so I returned to my derailed path of medicine and became a pediatrician. 2002 was a significant year for me. Two significant events marked that year for me: 1- I emerged from a horrible crushing black fog and decided to become a medical doctor, and 2- I gave my life to Christ. It wasn't an easy ten years, except for the first year when I was in love with God and immersing myself deeply in His word, the rest of the years were a daily battle. Battle with self, flesh, school, work, matters of the heart, loneliness. There were many times that I felt like just giving up. There were many times that I turned my back on God because I felt He wasn't answering my heartfelt pleas: no bible reading, no church attending. Somehow, I made it through. I survived. Am late to the game on this one. And unfortunately, I learned about this author due to her obituary (sigh) but I just finished her two novels this week and they were awesome. Her second one Feminista, much greater than her first. Who am I even talking about? A beautiful woman named Erica Kennedy  who wrote the novels Bling (2004) and Feminista (2010). Really great books, I could not put them down until I was done.

I should be writing my notes but I ordered "Fine Boys" by Eghosa Imasuen yesterday, and it was a total wrap. Just got released from the spell the book cast on me. Inspiring. Amazing. Must read.

Water and I have this amazing passionate but very unreciprocated love affair. I love it, it doesn't know that I exist. I love it in all its forms, rain, river, lake, ocean, a tall glass of cold water. Unfortunately, I can't swim to save my life. All of my life, with the exception of the past few months, I've lived close to a body of water. Cambridge (Mass), Lagos, Boston, Worcester, Miami. Now am in the desert, and even though the mountains are gorgeous, it's just not cutting it for me. I guess that's why I am drawn to any form of picture or photo with water in it. I took the following pictures during my last months in Miami using my phone and my ipod touch. I blew them up in a graphic editing program called GIMP , free of course. I woke up on time for once and for once instead of writing nonsensical complaints in my morning pages, I actually wrote about my beloved characters. So am happy! My writing corner, except for the lamp and books, everything was thrifted. The chair was my first repair.  Before. I painted the chair with fabric paint, but I ran out of paint and covered the seat with an old skirt of mine that was made from ankara (adire?????). I discovered wood glue, and glued the leg back on. Now that I am not scared of painting wood, I think I will sand the feet down and restain them, one day. The bamboo table was $12.99. It took me a week and a half to decide on it. It was covered in dust, the glass was taped down and it looked mad beat up, plus it was missing a glass top in the middle. $12.99 Goodwill I thought the price was too much. But then, I saw this: $199,  Ballard Designs And I ran back immediately and snatched it up, soap and water, glass clean...

So I finally committed to the lampshade I bought for my Goodwill lamp. It was a basic white rectangle shade from Target . I couldn't get anything longer because they didn't have any, plus and actually most important, I didn't want to buy a shade that cost more than the lamp. But that's exactly what ended up happening. Note to self, do not buy a lamp without a shade. At first, I hated it because you could see the meta l part peeking out from under the lampshade. Dang, I forgot the before picture. But after I painted it black and covered it in gold duct tape, i think i might like it.  The question now is, just cover the top in gold or cover both top and bottom.
